So a few months ago I decided that I needed to start seriously thinking about my future and career plans. I’ve never known what I wanted to do and have just carried on studying in areas which I find interesting. However, after a year at my current job I wanted to work out what I could do with my life. I’ve been at my job for a year, but as it’s part-time so I needed to find something a bit more stable. I was asked many times ‘what would be your dream job?’ Well the answer that kept popping into my head was to work at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London, so I set off to find out how to do this!
I contacted various people in university’s and museums to ask for their advice, and they were all very helpful. I kept getting the answer that I would need to get some experience and that it would be a good idea to get a master’s in Museum Studies – so that’s what I’m doing!
After some searching I’ve found a distance learning course at Leicester University which I plan to start next year. I’ve also managed to get some museum experience at my local museum. The Guildford Museum look s at the local history of the town and I’ve mainly been putting the information from entry cards onto a database. I’ve only been there a few weeks but I’ve already learnt a lot about the procedures and issues that come with a small museum.
I guess the most exciting thing that’s happened before I started this blog was the tour I went on of the mammal collections at the NHM. This all happened because I emailed the collections manager of the vertebrates for some advice and he invited me up to have a look and a chat. It was so cool going around the back of the museum, looking into cabinets filled with skeletons of various mammals. It definitely inspired me to get a career there! I just need to get my head down and do the work now and fingers crossed in years to come I might get there!
